In Guangzhou and stuck on something?
Message me.
Hi, I'm Nick, a Guangzhou (Canton) local. If you've run into an issue or feel stuck, feel free to drop me a message—I'm here to help you get things sorted.
How can I help you today?
Here are a few common situations visitors run into in Guangzhou. If what you're facing isn't listed here, feel free to message me anyway.
"My payment isn't going through."
Whether Alipay or WeChat Pay declined your card, or a small shop only takes local QR codes, don't worry. Send me a screenshot of the error message and I'll help you troubleshoot it step by step. If you're missing an SMS verification code, make sure SMS roaming is enabled on your home SIM. *(Safety reminder: you will always enter your card details yourself—I will never ask for them.)*
"I have no internet, or Google and WhatsApp won't load."
This is usually an easy fix! It typically comes down to three things: data roaming is toggled off for your eSIM line, you're connected to hotel Wi-Fi (where international apps stay blocked), or the plan connects directly to a domestic network. Try turning off Wi-Fi and checking your roaming settings first. If you're still offline, shoot me a message and we'll figure it out together.
"My driver is lost, or calling me in Chinese."
Don't panic if your driver calls speaking Cantonese or Mandarin. Send me a quick message and I can speak with them on your behalf, or send you the exact Chinese location pin and address so you can show them or paste it into your map.
"I can't read the menu, or I need to explain an allergy."
Snap a photo of the physical menu or the table's QR ordering screen. I'll happily explain the dishes, flag ingredients like peanuts, gluten, or meat, and give you the exact Chinese phrase to show your server so the kitchen gets it right. I can also point you toward great local spots nearby.
"The front desk says they can't host foreign guests."
Some smaller inns lack the registration system required for foreign passports and may hesitate at check-in. Send me the hotel name—I can call the front desk to clarify their policy, or quickly help you find a verified alternative hotel nearby that welcomes international travelers.
"I'm struggling to book attraction tickets or trains."
Many popular museums and attractions only release time slots through Chinese mini-programs, which can be tricky to navigate. Tell me where and when you'd like to visit. If you need help booking, I can assist directly (with a 100% refund guarantee if tickets are unavailable), or tell you exactly which station window to visit and what to bring.
"The metro turnstile won't let me through."
Guangzhou Metro gates accept contactless foreign cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB) marked with the tap symbol—just make sure you use the exact same card to tap in and tap out. You can also generate a local transit QR code in Alipay. If both fail, purchasing a single-ride token with cash at the service window is an easy backup. Message me if you get stuck at a station!
"I need cash, and the ATM rejected my card."
Not all ATMs in China accept international cards. Look for branches of major state banks (like Bank of China or ICBC) displaying the Visa or Mastercard logo. If you run into an error screen, send me a photo and I'll translate what it says and help you locate a compatible machine nearby.
You don't need a group tour for any of this. My free guides cover the basics so you can do it yourself. If you'd rather have a local on your side, I can help before you fly and while you're here.
